9/11 DragonCon 2016 Costume Sparks Outrage

ATLANTA, GA — DragonCon, which marked its 30th anniversary this past Labor Day in downtown, has been known for its fans who dress in some pretty outlandish costumes.

However, one couple's outfit has drawn the ire of thousands on social media.

11Alive captured the image of a couple dressed as a pair of burning World Trade Center towers, with puppets depicting people jumping out of the buildings.

The reference, of course, is to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York City, in which thousands of people died after the Al-Qaeda attack on the United States.

A DragonCon spokesman called that costume "offensive, distasteful and completely inappropriate," and also said the couple's DragonCon badges were pulled and they were escorted from the convention.

Organized for fans, Dragon Con features more than 3,300 hours of comics, film, television, costuming, art, music and gaming over four days. Dragon Con is the largest multi-media convention focused on fantasy, science fiction, gaming, comics, literature, art, music and film.

The event ran over Labor Day weekend over several downtown hotels.
