Earthquake Tremor Felt in Atlanta

Tremors from a 5.9-magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia could be felt in parts of Atlanta Tuesday afternoon.

The quake struck just before 2 p.m. and shook many cities along the East Coast, according to the Associated Press.

"Around 1:55 PM, [my husband] Stuart and I experienced an earthquake tremor at our address," Kit Sutherland, president of the Fourth Ward Alliance, said in an email. "There was enough movement to cause artwork to shake on the walls, pendant lights to sway, plants to sway, doors to rattle, etc. No damage or injuries that we know of."

Other local people shared their experience on Twitter. 

"I felt it in my 4th floor loft in Midtown Atlanta," JL King said in a Tweet. 

Nathan Minor said he felt the quake in West Midtown.

"I totally felt it here," Minor said in a Tweet. "It was very subtle, but I felt it."

Lauren Wrather said the tremor was "very subtle" but that her desk began to shake in her third floor office at 10th Street and Argonne Avenue.

"I thought I was going crazy," Wrather said in a Twitter message. 

Midtowner Peter Wallace also felt the quake on the third floor of the Pritchett Center building on the campus of All Saints' Episcopal Church on West Peachtree Street. 

"We just felt a swaying in our building for 15 seconds or so," Wallace said via Twitter. "We figured it was an earthquake, though I'd never felt one before."
