Financial momentum continues for Alex Wan’s Council President campaign

Atlanta City Councilmember Alex Wan, who is seeking the second-highest elected position in Atlanta government – Atlanta City Council President, raised $62,689.00 in the campaign finance disclosure period ending September 30.

This brings Wan’s cumulative fundraising total to nearly $300,000.00 since he officially announced his run for the office Jan. 4. This latest financial disclosure notes that the campaign has over $170,000.00 on hand.

“In the three months since our last disclosure we received donations from so many individuals, continuing to demonstrate a broad base of support from across Atlanta,” Wan says. “Our City is made up of a diverse array of stakeholders, and I am heartened and humbled to have support from every corner of Atlanta. This underscores a central tenet of my campaign: That by working together we can address Atlanta’s challenges and realize the shared vision for the City we love.”

Wan’s funds raised for the period and cash on hand both continue to outpace that of his two opponents. Since the beginning of his campaign for City Council President, Wan has enjoyed support from Atlanta residents who appreciate his experience and focus on specific key issues, as well as from business and community leaders. “I am particularly proud that contributors have come from throughout the city,” noted Wan.

“Alex’s business acumen, real-world experience, track record at City Hall, tempered and collaborative work style and, in particular, his continued vision for Atlanta’s neighborhoods and its future resonates with people from across Atlanta,” says Jenifer Keenan, an Atlanta attorney and an active intown Atlanta parent who is advising Wan on his campaign. “The financial aspect of this support is crucial, as the final weeks running up to the Nov. 7 election are a time when Alex needs to continue to connect with as many citywide voters as possible and that, of course, takes money.”

Wan has been endorsed by the Buckhead Coalition, RPAC (representing both the Atlanta Board of Realtors and Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors), Georgia Equality and The Victory Fund. He also received the Committee for a Better Atlanta's highest possible ranking, "Excellent.” Wan’s score of 96 out of 100 was the highest in the field in the Council President’s race.

Wan was first elected to the City Council District 6 post in 2009 and easily earned a second term in 2013 with 76 percent of the vote, both times garnering a broad base of support. He is the first Asian American and first openly gay man to serve on Atlanta City Council. He is (currently) Director of Development and Alumni Relations at Emory University.

Raised in Atlanta and a Morningside homeowner for over 20 years, Wan was perhaps best known before his Council win for long-time community involvement, including service on the Invest Atlanta (formerly Atlanta Development Authority) Board and founding For the Kid in All of Us, an all-volunteer non-profit serving children in need. He currently serves on Boards of Directors for the Piedmont Park Conservancy, the Little Five Points Community Improvement District (CID), and the Olmsted Linear Park Association.

He holds a Bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech, a Finance MBA from Wharton Business School, and has completed educational programs at Dartmouth and Harvard.

The Atlanta City Council President is elected city wide, presiding at all Council meetings and voting in the event of a tie. The president of the Council also appoints chairs and members of the various committees. Council President also serves as vice mayor, acting for the mayor in certain instances. The Atlanta City Council President is elected for a four-year term, with the election to be held in November 2017, taking office in January 2018. The current City Council President is running for mayor.
