Food Fears: Navigating Nutrition at Home and Abroad Presented by the U.S. Fund for UNICEF's Southeast Region Speaker Series

What: The Southeast Regional Office of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF’s Speaker Series Committee will host an informative panel discussion moderated by Dr. Sanjay Gupta with three authorities in pediatric nutrition, fitness & child health:· Caryl Stern, President and CEO U.S.Fund for UNICEF· Dr. Sandra Hassink, Past President, American Academy of Pediatrics· Diane Holland, Senior Nutrition Advisor, UNICEF Nutrition Section These expert panelists will share their knowledge about food insecurity around the globe, touching on issues affecting children, with candid discussion about malnourishment, hunger and food safety. The discussion will also talk about UNICEF Kid Power, which helps kids get active and save lives. By getting active with the UNICEF Kid Power Band, kids go on missions to earn points and unlock therapeutic food packets for severely malnourished children around the world. More than 2,500 Atlanta students recently participated in the UNICEF Kid Power school program, and unlocked more than 11,800 packets of therapeutic food for their peers around the world.
Why: Every day, 16,000 children die from preventable causes. Almost half of these deaths are children under 5 years old, who suffer from malnutrition. One in four children globally are malnourished, which can also cause physical and emotional stress. Our relationship to food is complex and complicated. For some, the types and amounts of food eaten lead to obesity. For others, food deserts mean that healthy food choices are not available. Still, hunger and malnutrition are persistent issues around the globe. We hope to quell these fears and present the truth about navigating nutrition at home and abroad! Who: The UNICEF Southeast Region Speaker Series Committee is Chaired by Susan Nethero and this event is Co-Chaired by Dr. Hansa Bhargava and Dr. Taz Bhatia.
