Former Atlanta Court Clerk Sentenced for Theft of Funds

Airiel Vrejean Wright must also return all of the more than $80,000 she stole while serving as a municipal court clerk.

A former clerk with the City of Atlanta Municipal Court pleaded guilty to charges that she stole more than $80,000 in court fines and was sentenced to prison time and restitution on Tuesday, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office said.

Airiel Vrejean Wright pleaded guilty to one count of fiduciary theft by taking and was immediately sentenced to one year in prison, followed by ten years on probation by Fulton County Magistrate Judge Karen Woodson.

Wright was also ordered to repay $81,292.35, the amount of money she stole while working at the Atlanta Municipal Court.

According to investigators, Wright pocketed the money from fines levied by the Atlanta Municipal Court between July 2010 and July 2012. She allegedly manipulated the court’s computer systems to accept payments that were less than the actual amounts of the fines, so Wright could steal the difference.

After a customer complained about getting incorrect change back for a payment, an investigation revealed Wright’s scheme and she was fired and arrested for her actions.
