Ga. Tech Student Killed On Downtown Connector

Kaden Campbell was struck by an SUV late Friday evening while trying to cross I-85 southbound at I-75 northbound, Atlanta police told Patch.

ATLANTA, GA -- A 19-year-old Georgia Tech student was killed late Friday evening while trying to cross the Downtown Connector in Midtown, Atlanta police said. Officers were dispatched to a call of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle around 11 p.m. Nov. 10 on I-85 southbound at I-75 northbound.

Officers arrived to find the male dead on the scene, said Atlanta police spokesperson Sgt. John Chafee.

A preliminary investigation indicates the male, identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office as Kaden Campbell, tried to cross I-85 southbound when he was hit by an SUV, Atlanta police said in its statement.

The driver of the SUV remained on the scene and at this time, no charges are anticipated. The accident, however, remains under investigation. Georgia Tech said Campbell was a first-year undergraduate and pledge with Sigma Nu fraternity.

"On behalf of Georgia Tech, we extend our deepest condolences to Kaden’s family and friends who are coping with the shock, confusion, and grief resulting from this tragedy," said Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Life John Stein. "Staff from the Georgia Tech Counseling Center are available, one of multiple services and resources in support of our community during this time of loss and grief."

Georgia Tech spokesperson Lance Wallace added the Counseling Center also sent staff members to the Sigma Nu house on Sunday to make their services available to the members of the fraternity.

According to his Facebook profile, Campbell graduated in 2017 from Brookwood High School in Gwinnett County.
