GBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Atlanta

The incident happened on Collier Road early Saturday morning.

ATLANTA, GA — An officer-involved shooting in Atlanta early Saturday morning is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

According to the GBI, the shooting happened at 1000 Collier Road at Collier Flats apartments between 12:40 a.m. and 1:00 a.m.

An off-duty Atlanta police officer encountered Pedro Maldonado, 41, in the apartment complex's parking lot. The GBI says Maldonado and Raul Delacruz, 48, were standing in front of Maldonado’s apartment when they were approached by an armed black male who robbed Delacruz.

Maldonado reportedly fought with the robber as Delacruz left the area. Maldonado then ran toward Collier Road and pulled a gun; multiple witnesses reported they heard gunshots. The off-duty officer, who had just completed his shift, was in the area and also heard the gunshots.

He reportedly observed Maldonado running with a gun in his hand. When the officer encountered Maldonado, he fired multiple times striking him. Maldonado was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
