GDOT Says Construction and Lane Closures Resume This Weekend

Work was suspended over the Thanksgiving weekend, but construction crews will be back on the interstates soon.

Georgia Department of Transportation projects to improve highway infrastructure throughout Metropolitan Atlanta resume this weekend, weather permitting. After a much-deserved respite from lane closures throughout the Thanksgiving weekend, motorists again are asked to avoid non-essential travel on west side Interstate 20. Projects there will require lane closures which, in turn, are likely to result in delays.The traveling public is encouraged to call 511 or consult 511ga.org before departing for real-time information on work status and traffic conditions.

Planned work this weekend is as follows:

  • Bridge joint and header replacement will require closing one eastbound I-20 lane and one westbound I-20 lane between Six Flags Parkway and its I-285 interchange continuously from 9 p.m., Friday, until 5 a.m., Monday;
  • Similar bridge work will require two westbound I-20 lanes from Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard to Lawton Street be closed continuously from 9 p.m., Friday, until 5 a.m., Monday;
  • Sign structure work on eastside I-285 will require an Outer Loop double lane closure and an Inner Loop single lane closure between Glenwood Road and Covington Highway, continuously from 9 p.m., Friday, until 9 p.m., Saturday;
  • Similar sign work on southwest side I-285 will necessitate a 9 p.m., Friday, until 5 a.m., Monday, closure of two Outer Loop lanes between Washington Road and the I-285 interchange with Interstate 85;
  • Bridge repairs in Newton County will require both entrance and exit ramp closures on westbound I-20 at State Route 12 from 9 p.m., Friday, until 5 a.m., Monday; and
  • On Georgia (State Route) 400, one lane northbound and one lane southbound between Lenox Road and the Glenridge Connector will be closed from 9 p.m., Friday, until 5 a.m., Monday, for fiber optic cable installation.

Other Georgia DOT work and routine maintenance will necessitate various lane closures this weekend; the Department also cautions that incident and emergency repair related closures may be necessary on any route at any time. As previously noted, all work is contingent upon favorable weather. Please, always drive cautiously, courteously, undistracted and unimpaired.
