Georgia's Best Waffles Aren't At Waffle House: List

Sorry, WaHo. Food Network has put out a list of the best waffles in each state, and the Avondale Estates-born chain isn't Number One.

ATLANTA, GA — OK, breakfast lovers, don't shoot the messenger here. But Food Network has put out a list of the best waffles in every state and Waffle House — born in Avondale Estates and now headquartered in Norcross — isn't the big winner in the Peach State.

Instead, an eatery in Inman Park whips up the best waffles in Georgia, according to the list. And, we have to admit, they look and sound pretty darned delicious.

Folk Art, at 465 N. Highland Ave., took the top spot in the state, according to the Food Network list. Billing itself as "artful eats for simple folks," Folk Art is a breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch spot that specializes in dishes ranging from jumbo biscuits and eggs Benedict to fried chicken sandwiches and burgers.

But it's their fun and creative range of waffles that got Food Network's attention.

"Chefs blend sweet potato into a buttermilk batter, forming a waffle base for combinations like peanut butter-banana, chocolate s’mores and the aptly-named Foul Play, which pairs a waffle with succulent fried chicken and peach compote made with Georgia fruit and — since it is in the South — a generous pour of Clyde May’s whiskey," food writer and editor Patty Lee writes in the list's Georgia entry.

Opened in 2013, Folk Art is run by the same team that owns and operates nearby Wisteria restaurant. Zagat gives the spot a glowing 4.3-star review, celebrating its charming interior, friendly service and amazing cocktails.

And, in 2016, Zagat called Folk Art one of the 10 Best Brunches in Atlanta, noting its "fun, Southern theme" and "pretty darn delicious brunch menu."

What do you think? Have you tried Folk Art's waffles? Are they your favorite? Or do you think WaHo — or someone else, for that matter — deserved the top spot? Let us know in the comments section or on social media.
