GPB Premieres "Georgia's Most Romantic Places" Thursday, February 11, 8 PM

What’s your idea of a romantic vacation? Walking on a secluded beach? Visiting the site of a great love story? Getting back to nature together without the distractions of technology? Dining at a world-class resort? GPB will show you how to enjoy all of these activities and truly “get away from it all” at eight of the state’s most sumptuous and unique vacation spots with the premiere of “Georgia’s Most Romantic Places” at 8 p.m. Thursday, February 11.

We’re also hosting a live Tweet Up during the broadcast on @mygpb featuring participants in the special who can share their romantic vacationing tips. Plus, GPB is giving viewers the chance to visit participating destinations in its “Georgia’s Most Romantic Places GPB Getaway Contest.”

Sapelo Island Bird Cottages – Sapelo Island

Sapelo Island encompasses more than sixteen thousand acres of land that includes tidal creeks, marshes, rivers and ponds. Sapelo Island Bird Cottages provide guests with urban amenities in a natural setting, including golf carts at each of its six properties that allow visitors to take in the history and breathtaking scenery of the island. GPB visits the Birdhouse Cottage located in the Gullah Geechee community of Hog Hammock.

Barnsley Resort - Adairsville

Filled with the love story of the original estate owners, Godfrey and Julia, a wine snob to serve you and a fairy godmother who works magic in the love department, the property is much like a 19th century European village. There are ninety guest rooms and suites and for the truly intimate experience, visitors can rent a cottage.

Twelve Oaks - Covington

Considered by many to be one of the most outstanding examples of Antebellum Architecture in the South, Twelve Oaks was built in 1836. It was bought out of foreclosure and has been renovated in a way that preserves its historic character. From the art to the woodwork, every detail is designed to replicate the home as it was in its glory days.

The Tree House Atlanta – Atlanta

The owner of this unique establishment built an adult tree house behind his home partly to fulfill a childhood dream. Seven trees house three separate rooms each connected by rope bridges. The living room features antique furnishings, including a twelve-candle chandelier and balcony overlooking an acre of forest.

The Gastonian - Savannah

Georgia’s oldest city boasts this beautiful bed and breakfast packed with antiques, fireplaces and romance. Located in the heart of the historic district, the Gastonian is comprised of two Regency-Italianate Style Mansions connected by a bridge. Guests of the Gastonian will feel immersed in the 19th century.

Smithgall Woods State Park – Helen

This state park is a real mountain retreat with six cottages available on the property. Guests can enjoy hiking, and those who like to fish will be happy to know that one of Georgia’s premier trout streams runs past the park. Other comforts include hot tubs and a catering service that delivers guests’ meals.

The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee - Greensboro

This is one of the finest lake resorts in the country with 251 guest rooms and suites, plus a 5,400 square foot lake house that has served as a temporary home for several world leaders. You can enjoy in-room dining 24 hours a day or a lakefront dinner. Other amenities include golf and s’mores every night served at the property’s main fire pit.

The Paxton - Thomasville

Built in 1884 by Colonel J.W. Paxton at a time when Thomasville was a winter retreat for wealthy northerners, The Paxton features classic Victorian architecture with 13-foot ceilings, nine-foot doors and the original curved stairwell. There are also three outside cottages for those seeking extra privacy. Guests can enjoy skeet shooting, kayaking and saltwater fishing during their stay.
