President and executive director of GPB Media, Teya Ryan, stressed the importance of state-wide coverage for high school sports, and wants Georgia high school football to be synonymous with GPB television.

I.J. Rosenburg, director of sports at GPB, announced that the network will kick off the season by broadcasting the 20th Annual Corky Kell Classic for the first time ever live from the Georgia Dome.

GPB also announced their partnership with the Southern Conference (SoCon) to broadcast the conference’s football games on Saturday afternoons beginning the first weekend of October.

“Our presidents and chancellors love the idea of working with public television … Hopefully, we will be able to impress some eyeballs on GPB that perhaps hadn’t been there as often,” SoCon Commissioner John Iamarino said.

GPB will also showcase other Georgia High School Association (GHSA) championship sporting events such as basketball, wrestling and cheerleading for the upcoming 2011-2012 season.
