ICYMI: Thieves Strike in Midtown, Victimize Tech Football Players

The players' cars were outside a hotel when thieves struck, smashing windows, damaging key cores, and stealing items, police said.

Atlanta police are investigating a series of car break-ins at a Midtown hotel which victimized several members of the Georgia Tech football team.

The cars were parked at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel on Techwood Drive between 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 a.m. Monday when the thieves used a screwdriver to break into the vehicles, an Atlanta police report shows. The football team is at the hotel during their preseason practices, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Players Matthew Jordan and Michael Muns reported Monday morning that someone smashed out the windows of their vehicles and stole checkbooks, while Austin McClellan reported a multi-tool had been stolen out of his truck after someone smashed out a window, according to the police report.

Quaide Weimerskirch and Rod Rook-Chungong said someone used a screwdriver to damage the key core of their driver side front door locks but reported nothing stolen, while Chase Alford, Andrew Marshall, Tyler Merriweather, and Bradley Turner reported someone smashed out the windows of their vehicles but stole nothing.

Brad Waggoner, the assistant director of player personnel, told police someone smashed out the rear passenger side window of his car and stole a Georgia Tech briefcase, according to the report.

Police do not have any suspects at this time, though officers were able to recover a fingerprint from the door frame area of Jordan’s vehicle near the smashed-out window.
