Laurent Coq Dialogue Trio, a Jazz Night Made in France

A city of Marseille native, Laurent Coq began his classical training, learning piano at the age of 7. At 18, he
moved to Paris and enrolled in France’s number one jazz school, CIM. In 1994, then 24, he received a grant to study in New York where his encounter with local musicians led to the creation of his Quartet. After many successful years as a recording artist and a film score composer, Coq settled in New York in 2000. In 2004, he formed the Laurent Coq Trio, which was to become the Laurent Coq Dialogue Trio, a name given after Coq’s eighth album as a leader, “Dialogue“. Along with guitar player Ralph Lavital (who was once was a student in his composition class) and singer Nicolas Pelage – both of French Caribbean decent – Coq has created a unique sound blending jazz to the enchanting melody of Caribbean songs, an incredible musical journey at the crossroads of different cultures.

Consisting mainly of duets between French pianist and his composition-student guitarist Ralph Lavital, the aptly named Dialogue thrives on a loose spontaneity and easy intimacy. (…) These casual, breezy exchanges easily stray from pleasantries to profundities and back again.
