Midtown Library Reopens with Sleek Exterior

Peachtree Branch open for good, official says.

After a two-month hiatus, the Peachtree Branch library in Midtown is functioning in digs that are more aesthetically gripping and greener.

The branch on Peachtree Street, across from the, reopened Dec. 22 after closing in mid-October due to construction on the building’s sleek new exterior. The library’s interior space remains unchanged, said Kelly Robinson, spokeswoman for the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System.

Exterior changes include a new front entrance on Peachtree Street and parking below the building, accessible via 16th Street. A new elevator lifts guests from the parking area to main library spaces, Robinson said.

The building owner, architecture firm Perkins + Will, is renovating the top four floors to house their 45,000-square-foot offices.

According to Perkins + Will, the building will feature street-level retail space.

Renovations include a more energy-efficient exterior glazing system, alterations to the front façade and more windows for natural lighting. An exterior terrace graces the fifth floor, the firm’s website says.

The offices will function as a “living lab and educational tool” and are projected to achieve LEED Platinum certification, according to the company.

Robinson said the library was closed in spurts throughout construction.

Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System is the largest in Georgia, with 34 libraries and a collection of more than 2.5 million items.

Robinson directed library patrons to the system’s website for a complete list of programs, events, children’s activities and library hours. Click on “Library Locations,” then “Peachtree Branch.”
