Midtown Monthly Construction Update Released

This month, construction crews are out in force repairing sidewalks, taking down holiday lights, and installing new plants and fencing.

Each month, we provide a construction update on our current Public Space Projects. See what’s happening as we give you more to love about Midtown.

Holiday Lighting - In mid-November, Midtown Alliance installed beautifully colored holiday lights in 5 Midtown locations: Ponce Triangle Plaza, Margaret Mitchell House reading room, 10th St. Pocket Park, 15th St./Arts District Plaza, and Pershing Point Park. The final lights will be removed from Pershing Point Park next week.

Sidewalk Repairs - Construction crews mobilized in November to begin repairs in approximately 150 priority locations on 11 corridors throughout the Midtown Improvement District. Work includes sidewalk patching or replacement, resetting pavers, curb and ADA ramp upgrades, and other sidewalk repairs to help maintain and improve Midtown’s walkability. Work has been completed at 25 locations on Peachtree St. from Ponce de Leon to Pershing Point Park, and on sections of Spring St. just north of 10th St. Construction crews are now working on Peachtree Walk between 11th and 13th Streets for the next 1-2 weeks (weather pending).

10th Streetscape - This project includes installation of new sidewalks, street trees, pedestrian lighting, landscaped medians, curbs, street paving, bike facilities, and ADA upgrades between Williams Street and Piedmont Avenue. Other improvements include a new signalized mid-block pedestrian crossing at the Midtown MARTA Station and burial of select overhead utilities. Streetscape work has been completed and remaining street trees were planted in December 2014. Final utility work will continue in February to transfer services for traffic signals and buildings so that overhead utility lines can be buried between Peachtree and Juniper Streets, followed by installation of remaining street lights.

Peachtree Streetscape: Southern End - This project began in May 2013 to extend the Peachtree Streetscape “pallette” to the southern end of Midtown. The “Fox Theatre block” between 3rd Street and Ponce de Leon Ave. was completed in 2014, including burial of overhead utility lines. Authorities are currently reviewing design and construction drawings for the next phase of improvements from Ponce to the South Peachtree Street Bridge, including new bike facilities, sidewalks, pavers, curbing, trees, and pedestrian lights and street furniture as needed.

Tree Well Fencing and Planting - Midtown’s Tree Well Adoption Program has been underway since 2013. To-date 212 tree wells have been adopted by partners, and new tree well fencing and low-water use perennials and flowers have been installed along much of Peachtree Street from Ponce to 15th Street. Look for more fencing and beautiful new plants throughout Peachtree Street and other key Midtown corridors in 2015.
