Nearby: Atlanta University to Permit Co-ed Dorm Rooms

Students will be able to live with people of the opposite gender starting in the fall.

A university in the heart of downtown Atlanta will allow its student population to live in dorm rooms with members of the opposite gender starting in August.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia State University students will have the option to list their gender preference when they apply for student housing for the fall semester. Students who want to have roommates of the same gender can apply for housing as normal and will be assigned a roommate based on gender.

Officials told the AJC that the move was spurred by numerous requests from people such as siblings and members of the LGBTQ community who may feel more comfortable with a roommate of an opposite gender.
