Opening Reception, "The World According to Consumerism"

Fay Gold Gallery is pleased to present “The World
According to Consumerism”, a group exhibition of 10 emerging Atlanta artists.
Opening reception will take place at the Westside Cultural Arts Center, founded
by Dr. James Chappuis, June 26, 2014 6:00-9:00 pm.

Susan Knippenberg, an artist and graduate of the Ernest G. Welsch School of Art & Design has curated the exhibition. “As we embark on a revitalized consumer movement where grass roots activism and nonprofit groups defend the rights of Consumer Joe, we cannot escape the everyday need for goods produced by corporations.”

The artists Michael Thrush, Peter Ferrari, Sam Parker,
Brendan O’Connell, Patricia Villafane, Brian Egan, Julio
Ceballos, Christine Lu, Matthew Burge, and Robie Duchateau have explored the
theme in several provocative media mainly video projection, installation,
painting and photography.

PATRICIA VILLAFANE photographs mannequins onsite in
Ikea. MICHAEL THRUSH’s paintings appropriate advertisements and popular
cultural imagery to create his own narrative of associations. JULIO CEBALLOS &
CHRISTINE LU’s installation comments on the over consumption of technology. MATTHEW
BURGE will present a series of digital projections. ROBIE DUCHATEAU photographs
the abstract elements of objects. BRIAN EGAN’s monotypes are text-based. BRENDAN
O’CONNELL paints brands from Walmart. SAM PARKER’s paintings are an allegorical
examination of technology. PETER FERRARI’s work deals with tubular
configurations that symbolize objects.

Though diversified, the work is infiltrated with the
sensation of reality, time, and space. The works are about elements
intrinsically connected to a larger understanding of consumerism. They are an
act of discovery, a search for compositional elements while allowing for the emergence of the unexpected.
