Orlando Shooting: Atlanta Police Step Up Patrols; Vigils Held

Atlanta, Ga -- Police say they are increasing patrols around popular gay Atlanta nightspots in the wake Sunday morning's mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub.
An estimated 50 people were killed and dozens more injured in what is believed to be the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The shooting was at Pulse, a nightclub that was hosting an event during Orlando's Disney World Gay Days.

A vigil was held for Sunday evening in Midtown in honor of the victims in the early morning shooting at an Orlando gay nightclub. The venue was TEN Atlanta's parking lot on Piedmont Avenue, where a mass celebration was held June 26, 2015, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage was a constitutional right.
Another vigil was held outside Burkharts Pub Sunday evening. More than 100 people attended the event, according to the AJC, which was organized by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

Atlanta police say no credible threats have been made in metro Atlanta, according to Fox 5 Atlanta, but they are nonetheless working with federal authorities to monitor any changes.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has ordered that all city flags be flown at half mast in honor of the victims:

- With planning under way for its own celebrations, the Atlanta Pride Committee on Sunday was sending love and support to the victims of a deadly shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando. "Our hearts go out to those present and injured in Orlando and to their loved ones," Atlanta Pride Committee said in a Facebook post.
