UPDATE: All Clear After Suspicious Package Reported Near City Hall

Atlanta police bomb squad confirmed that there was no threat, a spokesman said.

UPDATE (12:35 p.m.): Atlanta police have determined that the suspicious package reported near city hall is just a simple package.

According to spokesman Greg Lyon, officials have discovered the item was nothing more than a backpack.

ORIGINAL STORY (12:10 p.m.): Atlanta bomb squad members are en route to an intersection near Atlanta City Hall after a suspicious package was reported there this morning.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says the call came in at approximately 11:30 p.m. for an object near the intersection of Washington and Mitchell streets. Police have closed off Mitchell Street, the AJC says.

Police spokesman Gregory Lyon has told Patch that the department does not yet have a description of the object, but the bomb squad is heading to the scene now.
