Boy Dies After Playing With Gun in Garage

Gwinnett County Police investigating Norcross fatality. Parents of 12-year-old aren't expected to face charges.

NORCROSS, GA — A boy playing with a gun died after accidentally shooting himself.

The gun went off shortly before 6 p.m. in the 4900 block of Appaloosa Trail.

The 12-year-old had been playing with the weapon in a Norcross garage, Gwinnett County Police told local media.

"It's our understanding that the gun is generally stored in a safe place and at some point the child gained access to it," Gwinnett Police Cpl. Deon Washington tells WSB.

The boy's parents likely won't face charges, police tell WSB.

"This is a very sad and unfortunate reminder for gun owners to ensure that your guns are locked in a place that children cannot access. It is also a reminder of how important it is to teach children the dangers of playing with guns," Washington said in a statement.
