Guadalajara Supermarket Taqueria

Norcross is home to some of the best authentic taquerias in metro Atlanta!

Guadalajara Supermarket

Located at 5730 Buford Hwy. in Norcross, this supermarket also has a hidden gem of a taqueria inside as well as hot meat section in the butcher department for such items as whole roasted Mexican-style chickens for sale. Everything is made from scratch including the corn tortillas. The prices are unquestionably inexpensive (weekday menu $1.20-$5.99) and the menu becomes much more extensive on the weekends for their larger crowds. While the menu is in Spanish there is always someone behind the lunch counter that speaks English and is happy to help translate.

We visited during lunchtime on a weekday so we ordered from the short menu. The items that we ordered were the pork tacos, beef sopes and the small chicken burrito. The pork tacos are made with a fresh corn tortilla stacked with a nicely roasted marinated pork shoulder topped with a finely diced cilantro and onion mixture and served with a wedge of lime.  The beef sopes is a layered freshly made corn tortilla with a slather of refried beans, chopped seasoned skirt steak, chopped lettuce, chopped cilantro, and grated quesco fresco cheese, a swirl of homemade Mexican crema and a few wedges of avocado. The chicken burrito includes the Mexican roast chicken, Mexican rice and beans, chopped lettuce, cilantro and grated quesco fresco all wrapped up in a flour tortilla. It is interesting that they serve two sizes of burritos. We order the small but the large could feed at least two people. Who knew that flour tortillas are made that big! We enjoyed their homemade spicy salsa verde that is served in an authentic molcajete on all three of the items we ordered. They serve other sauces as well but we liked this one the best.

A gentleman at the counter let me take a picture of his chicken fajita. He explained to me that the fajitas that are served on a flat smoking sizzling hot cast iron skillet are not authentic Mexican. He said those hot skillets makes your clothes and skin smell like the fajitas for the rest of the day! So there you have it!

While you wait for your food to be prepared, you need to visit the refrigerated sections to select something to drink. They have a large selection of sodas (including Mexican Coke which tastes different from American Coke), juices and bottled water. Their bottled water also is bottled in Mexico.

As with all the taquerias in the Mexican supermarkets in Norcross, the ingredients are super fresh, the sauces are made from family recipes and the prices can’t be beat.
