A woman was visiting the jail while her dog died in her car. She didn't have far to go when police arrested her.

NORCROSS, GA — A Norcross woman was arrested May 23 after police say a deceased dog was found in her parked car at the Gwinnett County Jail.

Connie Wright Gomez, 46, told deputies she left her dog Rambo, a Rottweiler, in her car while she visited the jail.

Police believe the dog was in the parked car for approximately five hours with the windows cracked close to an inch.

"We shared this tragic incident with the public in the hopes that it will serve as a reminder to pet owners that the warm temperatures make it unsafe to leave a beloved pet in a parked car," said Sheriff's spokeswoman Deputy Shannon Volkodav. "These horrific incidents can easily be avoided by simply making smart choices for your pet. They depend on us to keep them safe.”

Gomez was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and taken to jail without incident. Rambo was taken by Gwinnett Animal Welfare & Enforcement.
