Man Kills Girlfriend, Escapes Wearing Handcuffs: Gwinnett Police

A man shot and killed his girlfriend at an apartment in Norcross ​and then escaped from police for about two hours before he was recaptured.

NORCROSS, GA — A man shot and killed his girlfriend at an apartment in Norcross Friday evening and then escaped from police for about two hours before he was recaptured, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.

At approximately 10:22 p.m. officers from the Westside Precinct responded to reports of a person shot at 5514 Estates Court in unincorporated Norcross. A man caller at the residence advised the call taker that he shot his girlfriend in the chest but would not advise on her current condition.

When officers arrived they located one woman, 26, deceased inside the bathroom of the residence. The man who called, 23, was still on scene and taken into custody without incident. The Gwinnett County Police Department homicide detectives and the Crime Scene Unit began responding to the scene. During that time, the male suspect requested to be checked out by medical personnel for an unknown complaint. At that time, while still in handcuffs, the suspect was able to flee on foot from the incident location.

Several officers descended upon the area securing a perimeter while a Gwinnett County Police Department K-9 unit began tracking the suspect. The Dekalb County Aviation Unit also responded for assistance. At approximately 12:10 a.m., the suspect was spotted by an officer, en-route to an unrelated call, at the intersection of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Interstate 85. The officer gave chase on foot and the suspect was apprehended shortly after, still handcuffed behind his back.

The suspect was transported to police headquarters to meet with detectives.The identity of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notification. The identity of the suspect is also being withheld pending further investigation.
