Tuesday January 28th, is International Data Privacy Day – Got data?

Data Privacy Day is an international holiday that occurs every January 28, and unlike the upcoming love holiday where candy and flowers are sure to be a hit – this holiday is to bring awareness and promote data privacy education.

Everyone should take some sort of precaution to protect their personal information whether online or in public.  Keeping your private data safe should be part of your disaster recovery plans, and disaster recovery is not only for businesses and government.

Awareness

Do you know what your Personal Identifiable Information is (PII)?  PII is considered your social security number, date and place of birth, mother‘s maiden name, medical history, educational, financial, and employment information.

Do you know what your personal credit-card information is (PCI)?  PCI is considered your name, card expiration date, credit card number, data on the magnetic strip and the 3 or 4 digit verification codes on the back of your credit card.

You are ultimately responsible for the protection of your PII and PCI; know who and when to give out your personal information and ask how your information is being protected once it leaves your hands.  Not everyone needs your social security number, and you don’t need to walk with twenty credit cards!

Teen Tip for online safety: Don’t tell anyone your real name and address or what neighborhood you live in.  Don’t give out any information that a predator could possibly use to find you.  The name of your school or school mascot is a clue that could be potentially used against you.  Remember, talking to strangers in public is a no-no and the same goes for strangers online!

General tip for all internet users: The Internet has an infinite memory so don’t post embarrassing or suggestive pictures, rude or mean comments, or illegal activities they can reappear just as you try to interview for that new job, or apply for college.  Be careful what you post to your profiles and what you say about others.  Use any available safety features that force you to identify yourself prior to posting; this could save your reputation, and would stop unapproved postings to your online presence.

It’s your data and cyber thieves will try any means necessary to get you to give up your PII and PCI, this information in the wrong hands is profitable for them and it will take you years to get your identify back!
