Van Driver Dies After Avoiding Thrown Motorcyclist On I-85

One man was killed and several were injured in a multi-vehicle collision on I-85 northbound Wednesday, near Indian Trail Lilburn Road.

NORCROSS, GA — One man was killed and several were injured in a multi-vehicle collision on I-85 northbound Wednesday, near Indian Trail Lilburn Road. The dead man's name is not being released until his family in Central America can be notified.

It was was determined by Gwinnett County Police that the driver of a sedan lost control of the vehicle and struck a motorcycle, ejecting the rider. A van traveling behind the motorcycle swerved to avoid the ejected rider and overturned, trapping the occupants. The operator of the van was discovered to be deceased at the scene. All other individuals besides the deceased, including the operator of the motorcycle, were transported to the hospital with various injuries.

The driver of the sedan who lost control was determined to be at fault. The northbound lanes of I-85 were closed from about 12:30 to about 3 p.m. At this time, it is not believed that excessive speed or alcohol were factors in causing the initial collision, and the Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit continues to actively investigate this incident.
