A couple of years ago I began to brew my own beer at home. The initial investment for equipment and such was around $150. To be honest, it was money well spent. A kit of beer ingredients costs $34-$38. From that kit, I brew nearly sixty high quality beers. When you compare that to the going rate of $7-$9 a six pack, you can see I'm making out pretty well. If you're someone who enjoys what I call "water" beer (Miller, Coors, Budweiser, etc) it's probably not prudent for you to invest in homebrewing because your preferred beer is already fairly cheap. However, for beer snobs like myself, homebrewing is definitely worth looking into. Don't be intimidated. Don't think it's too difficult. It's not. Buy a big iron pot and a starter kit from a home brew store, and you're in business. Get busy enjoying the robust flavors you create in your own kitchen for half the money you'd spend at the grocery store. Like most things in life, if you're willing to put in a little extra effort, you will be kindly rewarded. Imagine how proud you'll feel drinking your own Oktoberfest as the leaves turn. Or how jolly you'll be drinking your own winter ale during the holiday season. It's the best gift you could give yourself.
