On December 1, 2012 about forty-five Interact and ROTC students from Lassiter High School went to the airport to honor troops who were deploying to Afghanistan. Lassiter’s Interact President, Brittany Ellison, has been passionate about this project and wanted to thank soldiers for their dedication. Once the “Celebrate Our Troops Field Trip” idea was approved by the Interact General Assembly, Lassiter’s Interact Club invited ROTC to participate in the project. After some research from WSB-TV, Lassiter made contact with Army Lt. Colonel Mark Brown. Lt. Colonel Mark Brown, who himself will be deployed at the first of 2013, provided a list of much needed items for the soldiers, and that list was passed on to Lassiter students. Lassiter students prepared goody bags that included snacks, hand sanitizer, lunch in a bucket, batteries, thank you notes, baked goods, and chocolates from a local business. Jewels Chocolates of Marietta was a major contributor to this project. Thanks to a lot of hard work, the students were able to put together over 100 goody bags for the soldiers. When the students arrived at the airport, they were escorted to the boarding pass area where they displayed banners and cheered for each soldier. Onlookers at the airport joined in on the celebration and had positive comments about Lassiter students. Trojan Nation is proud of this project and thankful for the servicemen and women! A special thank you to Captain Bill Wilkerson, First Sergeant Lorenzo Cox, and Mrs. Melonie McCallum for helping coordinate this event.
