Blackwell to Join State Supreme Court

A native will be sworn in as the Supreme Court of Georgia's newest justice on Thursday.

Judge Keith R. Blackwell was appointed last month by Gov. Nathan Deal to succeed Chief Justice George H. Carley, who resigned effective on Tuesday. Blackwell previous served on the Georgia Court of Appeals, to which he was appointed by former Gov. Sonny Perdue in 2010.

Blackwell was raised in Ball Ground, in Cherokee County, and is a graduate of and the University of Georgia, where he received his undergraduate and law degrees. He has worked at the firm Alston & Bird, LLP and as an assistant district attorney in .

Blackwell and his wife, Angela, now live in Cobb County with their three daughters. He will become the 92nd justice since the court was created in 1845. The swearing-in is scheduled for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the House Chamber at the State Capitol.
