Genealogy Society of Cobb County Georgia Monthly Meeting

Genealogy Society of Cobb County Georgia Monthly Meeting

Time: Tuesday, July 26, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Place: First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, 189 Church Street, Marietta, Georgia 30060

Program: Looking in All the Right Places: An Overview of Geography & Genealogy.

Karen Molohon, a genealogist with 35 years of genealogy research experience, illustrates in her presentation the interdependence of researching both geography and genealogy in determining a clear and accurate picture of ancestral history. The genealogist needs to know not only about the longitude and latitude of the place but also the location’s relationship to the broader territory and the physical / biological / cultural qualities of the region where our ancestors lived. Come to the meeting and learn more about gazetteers, what happens when the location changes names, determining shifting boundaries and disappearing jurisdictions, maps, high-level overview of migration trails, GPS, interactive maps, and available software.

Karen is active in the genealogical community serving as Webmaster of the Cobb County Genealogical Society and previously served as President as well as other positions. She is also a member of the Georgia Genealogical Society (past Board Member), the National Genealogical Society, Illinois State Genealogical Society, and Association for Professional Genealogists. She has a M.S. Education degree and M.S. in Technical Communication degree; and is a retired Lead Information Designer. Her favorite lecture topics include: getting started, research organization, census records, geography, migration & mapping, and photography & genealogy. An avid photographer, Karen concentrates on wildlife, landscape, and outdoor subjects.

Also, there will be a 15 minute presentation of the information that is available on the Society’s Website that can potentially help members with their research.
