Longhorns Hook Wolverines 27-10

The improved their record to 2-0 with a 27-10 victory over the in their home opener Friday night.

After a sluggish start, highlighted by a botched snap on a punt that lead to a Woodstock safety and a 2-0 lead for the Wolverines, Kell first got on the board with 2:44 left in the first, when Michael Valero caught a pass and forced his way into the end zone.

The next points came from the foot of Cameron Massung, who drilled a 27 yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-2 with 7:55 to go in the second quarter.

Six minutes later, Jamari Moore busted out a huge run that ended with a touchdown and a 17-2 lead. Woodstock added a late field goal to make the score 17-5 at the half.

Near the end of the half, Kell's defense began to notice that the Woodstock players were already tiring out. This grind would become even more apparent during the second half.

At halftime, current and former members of the military were honored at the 50 yard line, including wounded warrior . The ever-raucous Stockyard crowd erupted in cheers of "USA!" and gave the service members a standing ovation.

Woodstock seemed to have worked some locker room magic, converting a 4th and 1 and driving the ball down to the Kell 25 to open the half. Kell's Julian Burris killed the Woodstock drive by recovering a fumble and taking it 75 yards the other way for another Kell touchdown with 6:30 left in the third quarter.

A notable defensive stop was made near the end of the third, after a bad snap on a punt gave the Wolverines the ball on the Kell 18. The Longhorns defense buckled down and only gave the Wolverines 11 yards and three points to end the quarter.

Not enough can be said about the strength of the Longhorn defense. Several times their backs were against the goal line and every time the Wolverines walked away with nothing or a field goal. They also contributed offensively, recovering a fumble and returning it for a touchdown.

On offense, several players made big contributions to the victory. was his usual self, making plays on both sides of the ball. Michael Valero scored the first Kell touchdown of the game, and Jamari Moore had a lengthy run for a touchdown to widen the gap. Cameron Massung was perfect on field goal tries.

The final points from the Longhorns came from Massung, who converted a 41 yard attempt with 8:51 left in the game. A second safety off a botched punt snap gave the Wolverines their final two points, and solidified the score at 27-10.
