Marietta/Cobb Communities in Schools Needs Volunteers

The organization works to reduce the number of dropouts at seven school campuses around the county.

Thanks to Irene Barton of the East Cobb County Council of PTAs for sending along the following about volunteer opportunities with the Marietta/Cobb County Communities in Schools program, which aims to prevent school dropout rates. She's on the organization's program committee and they're seeking mentors and tutors above all to work with at-risk students:

Are you still searching for the β€œright” New Year’s resolution to make? How about making a commitment to something that you will actually look forward to keeping? That will notΒ only provide a benefit to you, but more importantly, will provide a lasting benefit to a young person?Β

Did you know that every 9 seconds, a student drops out of school and into an uncertainΒ future? Many times, the student is making that decision without understanding theΒ longer-term consequences of his or her choice.

Communities in Schools is the largestΒ dropout prevention organization in the US and accomplishes its work through a networkΒ of nearly 200 local affiliates. Communities in Schools Marietta/Cobb County (CISMCC)Β works on site at 7 school campuses with identified students and also provides otherΒ
programs and initiatives in the fulfillment of its mission.Β

An integral part of CISMCC’s model of surrounding students with a community ofΒ support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life is the recruitmentΒ of community members to be mentors and tutors to the students it serves.

TheseΒ programs help children grow and develop and can also cultivate character and allowΒ adults to serve as a friend, a trusted counselor, a tutor, or a coach. There is flexibilityΒ in terms of times and days; we will help you create a meaningful experience no matterΒ what your schedule is. You could make a marked difference in the life of a youngΒ person by simply being a dependable, trusted presence.Β
