NE Cobb Man Dies in Police Shootout
The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office released his name today.
The man killed in Friday night's police shootout on GA 400 lived in a neighborhood on Oak Harbor Trail, which is in Northeast Cobb.
According to Alpharetta-Milton Patch, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office today identified the man as 52-year-old Curtis Hicks of Marietta.
Just after 8:30 p.m. Friday, Alpharetta Police Officer David Freeman pulled Hicks over for a tag violation when Hicks allegedly shot Freeman in the lower abdomen, right elbow, shoulder and leg, said George Gordon of the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety. Another bullet grazed Freeman's back.

The officer was able to return fire multiple times after being shot, but did not hit Hicks.
Freeman managed to call for assistance as Hicks drove south on Main Street (GA 9), fleeing the scene.

"We put out a lookout on the vehicle and immediately a Roswell police unit intercepted the suspect's vehicle," Gordon said.
A chase went up and down Holcomb Bridge Road, and apparently even back onto GA 9, before Hicks got on GA 400. His vehicle wrecked north of the Northridge Drive exit.
"At one point the suspect lost control of his vehicle at high speed and wrecked," Gordon said. "He exited his vehicle and opened fire on the additional police officers."
A female motorist was shot as Hicks fired at pursuing police officers on Alpharetta Highway in Roswell, Gordon said. She sustained a wound to her hip.
"We had approximately four police vehicles that were struck by gunfire," Gordon said. "A number of officers returned fire and killed the white male suspect."
Freeman and the female motorist were taken to North Fulton Hospital.
"Most importantly out of this our police officer is currently at North Fulton Hospital in stable condition," Gordon said. "For that we are grateful."
