7-Count Indictment for Man Accused of Assaulting GSP Trooper

Criminal indictments are not evidence of guilt; they are only charges. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

For allegedly biting a Georgia State Patrol trooper and hitting the officer with a flashlight during a traffic stop, an Oconee County man faces formal charges.

According to a 7-count indictment returned by an Oconee County grand jury this week, David Earl Lucas, 40, of Dash Road, is accused of driving a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol on June 6, 2011.  When confronted in the parking lot of on Monroe Highway, Lucas bit the trooper on the arm, causing bite marks and scarring, and hit the officer with a flashlight, the indictment alleges.

Lucas was formally charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer, battery, obstruction of an officer, interference with government property, driving under the influence, failure to maintain, and a taillight violation.
