Athens Technical College student named winner of The Classic Center Cultural Foundation culinary scholarship

ATHENS, Ga. – The Classic Center Cultural Foundation is pleased to announce Imelda Nelson as the winner of its second annual culinary scholarship competition.

Nelson, 32, a student in Athens Technical College’s culinary arts program, was among two scholarship finalists who were selected to prepare a dish during Athens Wine Weekend at The Classic Center that was judged by a panel of two local chefs.

Her winning dish was a Parisian frittata and mixed greens salad with balsamic vinaigrette, roasted asparagus, pumpkin puree and tomato sauce.

Nelson will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and her college’s culinary program will receive $500.

“This is my first time winning in a scholarship cooking competition, and I am so excited to win because it proves that hard work really does pays off!” she said. “I learned that perseverance against all odds and striving to do your best will give you the chance to win.”

The Classic Center Cultural Foundation’s mission is to support the youth in our community by helping to further their education in the arts. The Foundation also offers performing arts scholarships for local high school students.

Nelson was named the scholarship winner Saturday during the Athens Wine Weekend Gourmet Dinner.

The panel of judges included Chris McCook, executive chef at Athens Country Club, and Daniel Massie, executive chef with Levy Restaurants at The Classic Center.

Angela Little-Bailey, also a student in Athens Technical College’s culinary arts program, was the other culinary scholarship finalist.
