Clarke County Leads Massive Increase In COVID-19 Cases In Area

The Department of Public Health reported 128 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, with 41 in Clarke County and six in Oconee.

The Northeast Health District reported a record number of new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the 10-county Northeast Health District with the release of the Department of Public Health Daily Status Report on Tuesday.

Led by Clarke County’s increase of 41 cases, the 10-county Northeast Health District added 128 new cases, and the seven-day rolling average of added cases jumped to 54.0 from 42.9 on Monday.

Every county in the District added COVID-19 cases, with Oconee County adding six new cases and Barrow County adding 38.

The largest number of cases added in a single day in the District going back to the middle of March had been 81 on May 27.

The Department of Public Health did not report any new deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the Tuesday Daily Status Report, and the seven-day rolling average of added deaths dropped to 0.7 from 0.9 on Monday.

The Department of Community Health did add one death in the Northeast Health District in its Tuesday Long-Term Care Facility Report.

That death--at a nursing home in Jackson County–will appear in the Daily Status Report only if the Department of Health decides to include it.

The Department of Community Health Report also listed two new cumulative cases of COVID-19 among residents of the 24 facilities in the Northeast Health District with COVID-19 cases, two new active cases among the residents, and two new staff infestations.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency reported on Tuesday that the number of Critical Care Beds in use in area hospitals remained unchanged. Thirteen beds out of 70 were available.

The Georgia Department of Revenue gave both Oconee and Clarke counties some good news on Tuesday with the release of the sales tax distributions for May. For both counties, the decrease in revenue over May of 2019 was much less than the same month comparison for April.
