GDOT Corrects Error On Mars Hill Road Closing Affecting Oconee County School Traffic

The GDOT contract specified that Mars Hill Road could not be closed when school was being dismissed.

Georgia Department of Transportation officials have corrected two errors in materials provided to those who attended the informational meeting at the Civic Center last week.

The documents distributed at the meeting said that Mars Hill Road lanes could be closed from 2 to 4 p.m. on weekdays from the southern intersection of Windy Creek Drive to Hog Mountain Road.

In fact, based on the $26.3 million contract that GDOT signed with contractor G.P.’s Enterprises of Auburn, the road cannot be closed during that time because of school dismissal traffic. Closings will start after 7 p.m.

GDOT also listed incorrectly the times of allowed road closings when there are no home football games at Oconee County High School or the University of Georgia.

Lane Closures can occur beginning at 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays under those circumstances, though the originally distributed materials said closings were not allowed until 11 p.m.
