Ivie Elected Mayor of Watkinsville

Ivie won the mayoral race Tuesday with 284 votes to opponent ' 114.  That breaks down to 71 percent versus 29.

With a total of 398 votes cast out of a pool of 1,687 potential registered voters, turnout was 23.5 percent. All results still have to be certified.

"I'm real gratified and appreciate the confidence that the voters in have placed in me, and I will do my very, very best to serve them faithfully and equitably," Ivie said.

He will serve a 2-year term.

When asked what he believes helped him win, Ivie said hard work and that they did their very best to contact every registered voter.

Ivie planned to celebrate with more than a dozen supporters at his home.

He said he'll spend the next month shadowing and learning from Mayor Joe Walter.

"I'll do the best I can to get up to speed as quickly as I can," he said.

Matthews wrote the following comment about the outcome of the race on Facebook: "We fought the good fight and came up a little short once again. Watkinsville will still be wonderful tomorrow, just not with me as the Mayor. It is truly a sad comment that such a small turnout decided an important race."
