Land Use Committee Refuses To Recommend Development Rights Program

The Oconee County Land Use and Transportation Planning Committee voted 6-5 on Tuesday night against giving further consideration to a Transfer of Development Rights program for the county.

The Tuesday vote, after 165 minutes of discussion across two meetings, countered the unanimous recommendation of a 16-member citizen committee that had studied TDR programs for six months.

That TDR Study Committee said in 2008 that the county should hire a consultant and conduct a study of the feasibility of a TDR program for the county.

The motion before the Land Use and Transportation Planning Committee was to recommend to the Board of Commissioners that it issue the request for proposals already requested by the TDR Study Committee.

The majority of the Land Use Committee members decided that their objections to a TDR program outweighed the enthusiastic endorsement of such a program by the TDR Study Committee.
