Meet The Owner of a Landscaping Business

Being outdoors is one of Eric Pope's favorite pastimes, and he is fortunate to have a business, PS Landscapes, that allows him to do just that.

Patch: When did you start your business?

Eric: In 1988, I started in Athens located on Whitehall Road.  Then moved to Ga. Highway 53 but I recently sold that property to YWCO.  We are now located Ga. Highway 15.  

Patch: Why this particular business?

Eric: I have a degree in horticulture.  I have been cutting grass and raking pine straw outdoors since I was about 6. I love to be outdoors.

Patch:  What is your favorite thing about your business?

Eric: Well, I love being outdoors; I love to do pretty things to make people happy.  Customer satisfaction is my favorite part.

Patch:  What is the most challenging thing about running a business?

Eric: Finding qualified help... getting people who care about what they are doing. But after 23 years, I have a great group of guys. 

Patch: What are your long-term goals for your business?

Eric: To sustain a good clientele. I don't want to be a huge company. I want to maintain what we have and be good at what we do. I wouldn't mind another 10 percent growth, but wouldn't want more than that.

Patch: What advice would you give to someone wanting to start a new business in Oconee County?

Eric: Do some research.  Be sure about yourself [and] be aware of the restrictions of local government.  Do it right from the get go and you will be successful.   I have burned bridges I regret, so be aware.  Deliver more than you promise. I have a business motto:  "Business is great, people are terrific, life is wonderful."  Just keep a good attitude!
