Oconee County Little League Rallies for Community Support

Donations are needed to help fund the 9/10 state champions' trip to West Virginia to compete in the 2013 South Eastern Regional Tournament this weekend.

Oconee County Little League is asking the community for support as one of its teams prepares to compete in the Tournament of State Champions.

The 9/10 boys All-Star team won the 2013 state championships on July 21. The team will now take a trip to West Virginia to compete in the 2013 South Eastern Regional Tournament against the Commonwealth of Virginia on July 27.

“We are so proud of them,” said Mike Lavendar, Oconee County Little League (OCLL) president.

"Due to our unprecedented level of success, it is necessary for the league to spend money that it has never had to spend in the past," Lavender posted on the organization's Facebook Page. "It is also necessary for the parents of the kids on the team to come out of pocket for expenses and miss days at work that they did not plan."

He continued, "I'm afraid we do not receive any financial support from Georgia Little League or Little League International in providing this opportunity for these kids to participate in this tournament."

The league paired with Blue Sombrero, its website administrator, to set up a donation system. If you are interested in donating, click here.

According to Lavender, Oconee County Little League is the first team to represent Georgia in the tournament that is not from Warner Robins or Columbus.
