Oconee's Unemployment Rate Shows Increase for June
The number of education workers unemployed during the summer and new graduates have contributed to higher unemployment rates around the state.
Preliminary unemployment rates for the month of June show Oconee's rate increased from 5.1 percent in May to 5.8 percent. The data was released by the Georgia Department of Labor on Thursday, July 25.
That increase is consistent with an increase in the Northeast Georgia region's rate, which was 8.4 percent in June, up eight-tenths of a percentage point from 7.6 percent in May.
According to the labor department, the rates increased primarily because of two seasonal factors: high numbers of education workers are unemployed during the summer and new graduates are considered unemployed until they find a job.
Oconee County's labor force was at 19,653 individuals in June, with of those 1,142 unemployed.
