Registering Your Cell Phone Could Speed Up Response Time in an Emergency

The Oconee County Sheriff's Office has set up a new voluntary cell phone registration program that will provide emergency responders with identifying information about the cell phone's owner when a call is placed.

The hopes to expedite response time for callers who use cell phones to contact 911 in emergency situations.

Cell phones equipped with GPS technology indicate an approximate location of the caller but the location is a dot on a map and not a street address, according to a news release.

That's why the Sheriff's Office has created a new voluntary cell phone registration program that enables residents to submit their names and addresses along with a cell phone number.  The data will be manually entered into the E-911 system.

"The result is that when we receive a 911 call from a cell phone number that has been registered with the system, the dispatchers will have the name and address associated with that number, and this very well could speed response to your emergency," the release stated.
