Search Underway for Suspected Car Thief

Oconee County deputies are looking for a male suspect in the Old Greensboro Road area.

Update: 7:40 a.m.

Authorities believe the suspect may have been picked up during the night by a family member and escaped, Chief Deputy Lee Weems wrote on Facebook around 7 a.m.

In Oconee County the hunt is on for a man who reportedly fled on foot in the Old Greensboro Road area after having been inside a car stolen from Putnam County, authorities reported shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies had responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle and attempted to stop it when the driver jumped out and fled into the nearby woods, Chief Deputy Lee Weems said.

Shortly after the incident, the was notified by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office that the vehicle was stolen, he said, and the two agencies are working together on the case.

The suspect, identified as 42-year-old David Agan, is described as a white male, 5'6" and 145 pounds, last seen wearing a white shirt and dark pants, Weems said.

A female connected to the case, whom Weems did not identify, was taken into custody, he said. 

The vehicle was recovered, he said.
