Senate Candidate Asks For Gun Laws In Response To School Shooting

A former U.S. National Forest Service supervisor who lives in the south of Oconee County will challenge incumbent Republican Bill Cowsert.

Marisue Hilliard, who helped found the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, told Oconee County Democrats last week that she was motivated to run for the Georgia Senate from the 46th District by gun violence.

Hilliard listed healthcare and education as other issues she will focus on in the campaign, but she said the need for “common sense gun laws” is what led her to seek public office for the first time.

The former U.S. National Forest Service supervisor who lives in the south of Oconee County will challenge incumbent Republican Bill Cowsert, an Athens attorney, in November.

Hilliard has no opposition in the Democratic primary on May 22, and Cowsert has no opposition in the Republican primary on that same day.

Hillard followed John Noel, a candidate for the Georgia Public Service Commission, to the podium at the Oconee County Democratic Party meeting, attended by 32 persons and held at the Chamber of Commerce in Watkinsville.
