Local organizations raise money through public ice skating at The Classic Center Arena

ATHENS, Ga. – The Classic Center in downtown Athens recently issued the call that it was seeking organizations interested in fundraising to volunteer at its new ice skate rental counter.

The response was overwhelming – two dozen nonprofits and other groups signed up to volunteer for more than 45 days of public ice skating sessions.

“We wouldn’t be able offer this many days of public ice skating sessions here without the help of these groups, so we really appreciate them donating their time to come here and volunteer,” said Meredith Metcalf, director of marketing at The Classic Center. “We hope the groups not only raise money for their causes, but that they have some fun, too.”

In return for their time working the ice skating counter, the groups get to keep part of the ticket revenue from each skater. Among the groups that have signed up are UGA Miracle, United Way of Northeast Georgia’s Wee Read program and the Athens Alumni National Pan-Hellenic Council.

The Classic Center is currently offering public ice skating sessions in its new Arena through December. The 17,000 square-foot removable rink is the only ice skating rink in Athens.
