Groceries, Medical Exams, Shoes, and More to Be Offered at Roswell Day of Hope

From wellness to food resources to addiction, there will be help for every need at the Roswell Day of Hope on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Free of charge to those in need will be bags of groceries, haircuts, new shoes and socks while supplies last, and the chance to consult with doctors and dentists. Guests can also speak to representatives from groups who provide a variety of services to those with mental-health concerns. Organizers want to give "people a chance to learn practical next steps, ask questions, and find support from trusted community resources before they get to the point where they don't know where to turn," explains Brenda Orlans who heads up the event.

The mental-health focus was added to the annual offerings after the COVID-19 lockdowns caused an alarming increase in the numbers of teens struggling with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Individuals and their families can learn what signs to look for to recognize addiction, bullying on social media, and a variety of other problems affecting people in large numbers.

"We want to remind our neighbors that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness," Orlans says.

The Roswell Day of Hope has been a beloved tradition in the community for seventeen years. It is a project of Hope Roswell, a nondenominational network of leaders from local churches. Last year approximately eleven hundred guests enjoyed the local coffee samplings, children's games, and music as well as the free resources, including shoes and haircuts. The year's event will take place on Sept. 26 from noon to 4 p.m. at Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill Street.

Guests in need of jobs can also talk to local employers who are ready to hire. Orlans explains that while jobs are available in Roswell, "we want to make sure our neighbors who need these jobs can actually connect with those who want to hire." City government, home health care, and food services will be among the job fields represented.

New to the event this year are free manicures. "We thought it would be a fun and meaningful way to show care and let people enjoy a little pampering, something that isn't always accessible to everyone," says Orlans.

Guests can also purchase food from truck trucks.

Community Charities North Fulton will provide groceries for guests to take home. Among those on hand at the mental health fair will be Rev'd Up Kids, NAMI, Pathways to Life, Summit Counseling, and Alpharetta Counseling, who provide a variety of support and expertise.
