2 Homes To Replace Baptist Church In Sandy Springs

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Sandy Springs leaders have given the green light to rezone land where a church will be replaced with two single family residences.

The City Council unanimously voted to approve rezoning 1.92 acres at 4795 Peachtree Dunwoody Road from RE-1 to RD-18. The land is currently home to Metropolitan Independent Baptist Church, which has been up and running for nearly 50 years.

However, the church has seen a decline in membership and its owner has chosen to sell the property. The land will be used to build two homes facing Peachtree Dunwoody Road. Each home will sit on about .95 acres of land each, according to city documents.

Pastor Dr. Nate Bednar, who served as chaplain for the Sandy Springs Police Department for eight years, told City Council members the church initially began more than 48 years ago, but has opted to close its doors.

"It's been a very difficult decision for us," he said.

According to the church's website, it was founded in 1969 and moved into the Peachtree Dunwoody Road location in 1973.

Bill Gannon, president of the High Point Civic Association, said his organization supported the church's decision to sell the property and petition the city for a rezoning. While he is "disappointed" the church has to close, he noted the proposed two-house plan is the most appropriate use of the land.

The church's website states the institution voted to dissolve its ministry and assets on Aug. 27, 2017.
