5 Stores Cited For Providing Alcohol To Underage Customers

The following information was taken from the Sandy Springs Police Department's Weekly Wrap Up.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Editor’s note: the following incidents were taken from the Sandy Springs Police Department’s Weekly Wrap Up compiled by Capt. Steve Rose, which contains some — not all — of the incidents that occurred Feb. 16-23:

We have so many issues associated with our kids that we forget that there are traditional problems and temptations that are consistent. With that thought, we decided to see who is and isn’t in compliance in my district, south district, with alcohol sales by sending in older, yet underage (well supervised and monitored, mind you) teens to see if they would be served alcohol.

This is known as an alcohol compliance check. On Feb. 22, police, along with code-enforcement staff, went to 13 establishments to see if they were doing their jobs. The three adult clubs were in compliance and denied entrance to the underage persons we sent in. The following establishments ran afoul of the required compliance:

That being said, we were happy to find that the following establishments were within compliance and have a tip of our collective hats:

  • Chevron Gas Station at 5600 Roswell Road.
  • Citgo at 5645 Roswell Road.
  • Valero at 5345 Roswell Road.

Please do not forget that underage consumption of alcohol can be a big problem for kids and as a parent, being sneaky is a good thing. If there is a problem, you should know it before someone informs you of it.

Assault

  • Oh there were many, but they involved domestic violence calls and drunk guys who didn’t know when to quit.

Fraud

  • An employee at a business at the Concourse said he received a fraudulent e-mail, disguised
as an e-mail from the owner, requesting W-2 forms for his 13 employees. The e-mail was sent to the e-mail address. Later, the same e-mail requested a payment to a separate account number, which made the complainant suspicious. He then found out the e-mail had been sent from someone other than the owner and was not displayed, but rather only listed the owner’s name in the “from” slot.
  • A 35-year-old woman said that just before 6 p.m. on the 19th, she received a phone
call from an out-of-state number and spoke to a male with a heavy accent -- described as Spanish -- who said her husband had been in an accident and they were holding him until she paid them money. She went to the Publix at 5630 Roswell Road and wired $1,000 to a woman in Puerto Rico. Once she sent the money, she called her husband and found that he was not being held or had been in an accident. Capt. Rose: Sadly, so many people are easily duped. Too bad. Here is a good philosophy when dealing with unsolicited conversation asking for your money: Be politely skeptical and ask questions. Usually, scammers are not so good at answering multiple questions.
  • IRS Scam: On Feb. 17, a 54-year-old woman received a call from someone she described as having an Indian accent, who said she was with IRS. She was told she needed to pay $2,600 or warrants would be served. Unfortunately, she complied and went to Walmart and purchased iTunes cards for that amount.
  • 5925 Roswell Road, 30328, 2/21: A 17-year-old said he placed an ad on Craigslist to sell a set of stereo speakers. A man named “Shawn” contacted him and made arrangements to meet. He gave the victim a $240 check and showed him an Alabama driver's license. The check came back fraudulent a couple of days later and the driver's license was fake too. The victim did say the man was in an 18-wheeler and apparently making a delivery at Lowe’s. The Craigslist phone used by the perp was since disconnected.
  • A 57-year-old woman said she answered an Internet ad for work and was contacted by an human resources person looking to expand into the Atlanta area. The victim received a check for $2,450 with instructions to send $2,400 of it to an account for Quincy Holman. She later received a check for $3,650 with similar instructions, but now she was suspicious. She received numerous text messages threatening legal action if she did not forward money. She was informed by her bank that $2,400 was being deducted from her account and it was now closed due to fraudulent activity.
  • A 40-year-old man reported that he was hired by a man to make a couple of round trips in his limo to
Milledgeville with several stops in between. He later found the credit card used was stolen. The value of the trips totaled $1,240.

Arrests

  • On Feb. 16, an officer responding to a suspicious car on Hammond Drive detected an odor of marijuana from the car after the driver rolled the window down. • 8700 block of Roswell Road, 30350, 2/16: Around 11:30 p.m., a street crimes officer ran a tag that came back showing the registered owner was wanted in Forsyth County on a felony drug charge (methamphetamine) and simple battery. He contacted the suspect, a female, as she exited her car to walk into the convenient store at Dunwoody Place and Roswell Road. She confirmed her name with the officer who told her she was under arrest on the warrants. She resisted and tried to run. He controlled her arm and they struggled a bit, with her yelling and screaming, as he attempted to handcuff her. At this time, the driver, obviously not a loyal friend, sped off. Although cuffed, she continued to fight the officer and at home point grabbed him where the sun doesn't shine as well as kicked him. A second officer arrived and they got her into the car. She admitted she ate the meth and was then taken to the hospital and later to a treatment center via ambulance.
  • 6650 Roswell Road, 30328, 2/17 (Huey Luey's): Cops responded to the restaurant and met with the manager who said a couple purchased shots of liquor but now refused to pay. The man said the shots were too expensive. He said the bartender offered the shots for free and he therefore, would not pay. The officer said if he did not, he would be arrested for stealing the liquor. The man said he would rather go to jail than pay. Okay, this is where you should probably take your ego back a notch, but he did not and went to jail after, of course, passively resisting the officer’s efforts to take him into custody. They were at the bar celebrating a birthday and look how it turned out.
  • 6120 PDR, 30328, 2/18: Around 6 p.m., officers were called to meet the hotel staff at Hilton to investigate drug use inside two rooms. The staff initially tried to investigate but the guests refused to let them in. The officers went to the rooms and entered, smelling marijuana and located the guests, who, surprisingly, were packing up to leave. One of the guests was on parole and probation on a felony burglary charge, and was not supposed to be involved with alcohol or drugs. He was also in possession of a 9 millimeter gun reported stolen from South Carolina. He was jailed on several felony charges.
  • 5610 Roswell Road (Target), 30342, 2/20: Loss prevention staff watched a male take two box sets of cards and conceal them, then try and leave the store. He was arrested for the $89 theft.
