Art Exhibition Opens Dec. 11 at Holy Innocents'

Artist Melissa Payne Baker brings her abstract paintings to "Ethereal Abstraction: Inspired by an Angel" exhibition in Ventulett Gallery.

“Ethereal Abstraction: Inspired by an Angel,” an exhibition of paintings by award-winning abstract artist Melissa Payne Baker, will open this Thursday, Dec. 11, from 6–8 p.m. in the Ventulett Gallery on the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School campus. The public is invited to a wine-and-cheese reception.

Many of Baker’s paintings are delicately colored, acrylic-on-canvas works—in pale blues and grays, soft russets, and splashes of turquoise and red. Others are abstracts in strong, saturated colors. She is also known for her unique textures, and works that sometimes include free-form crosses, and ethereal angels or butterflies.

The Atlanta-based artist was voted Best Atlanta Artist in 2012 by Jezebel Magazine, Best Atlanta Artist 2011 by Atlanta Magazine, and Best Emerging Artist 2010 by Creative Loafing. She has also been a featured artist at the Atlanta Symphony Decorators’ Show House, has had her works displayed at the High Museum, and was called “The It Girl”by The Atlantan magazine.
