SANDY SPRINGS, GA — A 33-year-old man accused of assaulting the mother of his child was arrested during a standoff Wednesday morning in the 6800 block of Glenlake Parkway Northeast, police said.
Officers received a 911 call from the mother of Dennis Carter's child around 8 a.m., when she told authorities he had assaulted her, Sandy Springs Police said.
When officers arrived at Carter's apartment, police said he went into the home and barricaded himself inside.
As officers approached the home, police said they overheard apparent gunshots coming from inside the apartment.
The officers then withdrew and evacuated nearby apartments out of precaution, police said.
Negotiators were then activated and were able to communicate with Carter, police said. They were eventually able to convince him to peacefully surrender, police said.
Carter was arrested on charges of false imprisonment, simple battery (family violence), possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and reckless conduct, police said.
The incident prompted heavy police presence and may have caused traffic delays, police said shortly before 9 a.m.
